Breaking News - Cliffhanger Finish to Parkstone Winter Series

After 10 races sailed the points coundn't have been closer. If either Andy & Carole Maskell, sailing FiFi, or Keith Aldridge & Chris Jermyn in Blue, won they would take the series. However, Bob Hoare & Bernard Merna had an outside chance if they were to win and the other two boats were DTP (down the pan dummy) then they could steal the series.

On top of a spring tide and with a promising southwesterly wind building Race Officer Basil Ellis set a course with a long beat to Wych. Iain & Slade Lamey, sailing Ffloater, led the fleet up the beat and were first at the windward mark with Bob & Bernard closely behind. After changing the lead four or five times, Bob & Bernard in Absolutely Fabulous finally broke clear to hold the lead and win the race. An error at the last mark caused the Lameys to drop a place to Paul Litton & Nick Cornish who took second. Behind them the series leaders struggled against a failing wind to recover from a bad start. FiFi managed to pull up to forth while Blue had to be content with the sixth spot.

This result left the series on a knifedge. Bob Hoare and Andy Maskell both had equal points, and included rescue duty points in their result. Bob Hoare & Bernard Merna finally won the series on tiebreak by counting back on first places. Andy & Carole Maskell were a very creditable second and Keith Aldridge came in third. Forth place went to Mike Kilbee sailing with Tony Cox, while another tiebreak split fifth with Cowes visitors Pauls Wills & Tony Bedingfield winning the break over Paul Litton & Nick Cornish.

The overall verdict - One Hell of a Series.
